Lunch from Sun Gourmet

Spicy Garlic Chicken from the Viewmont Mall’s longtime Chinese restaurant…

Yesterday, I had lunch at Sun Gourmet (Dickson City) at the Viewmont Mall. For those not familiar, this place has been a staple of the mall’s food court for several years. Based on what I’ve read online, ownership of the eatery has changed hands at least once. Admittedly, I don’t know who owns the place now and for the purposes of this article, that doesn’t matter.

My order of Spicy Garlic Chicken and an eggroll

What I can tell you with complete certainty is that the Spicy Garlic Chicken I had was pretty good.

For reference, my complete order was the Spicy Garlic Chicken with Fried Rice, an egg roll, and a medium Pepsi. The woman working the register took my order and told me it would be about ten minutes. The food was ready a few minutes before that, served on a styrofoam plate, which I carried to my table on one of the red trays that all the food spots at the Viewmont Mall food court share.

The Spicy Garlic Chicken, which wasn’t spicy at all, comes with a decent portion of vegetables and mushrooms. The meat and veggies are doused in a flavorful garlic sauce and plated next to a mound of pork fried rice. The rice was tender and mild in flavor, with the small meat bits adding some porkiness to each forkful of rice.

In terms of portion size, what I got was more than filling, and I’d consider it to be some good, fast Chinese food. Based on my experience, I’d have no hesitation grabbing some more food here as the opportunity presents itself. Sun Gourmet (which is listed as “New Sun Gourmet” on the Viewmont Mall’s website, though the “New” isn’t on any of the signage in the food court) seems exactly what I want from a mall foodcourt eatery.

The food tastes good, costs less than $10 (including the egg roll and the medium soda, I think my total was about $13), and is handed to me less than ten minutes after I order it.

Should you happen to find yourself in the area of the Viewmont Mall and looking for a quick bite, Sun Gourmet could be a good option. The service is friendly, and the food is tasty and served quickly. And as an added bonus, you can sit and do some people-watching in a mall food court. How retro.
