Dinner from Colarusso’s Pizza Dunmore

Pizza and hot wings are proof that God loves us…

As I write this, it’s less than a week since the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl. And while I did eat a worrying amount of hot wings while watching the game, I am nowhere close to hitting my weekly consumption limit. Because I don’t have any such limit.

This being the case, I ordered my dinner from Colarusso’s Pizza Dunmore a few nights ago. Cholesterol be damned, I’m having another full portion of pizza and wings!

Specifically, a six-cut Old Forge-style Red Pizza and an order of Jumbo Wings.

Anyone who lives in the 570 area code is likely familiar with the Colarusso name. By my count, at least eight Colarusso’s pizza establishments are spread across the area. There’s Colarusso’s Coal Fired Pizza (Dickson City), Colarusso’s 2.0 (Duryea), Colarusso’s Cafe (Clarks Summit), Colarusso’s La Palazzo (Moosic), Colarusso’s Pizza and Pasta (Hanover), Colarusso’s Cafe (Avoca), Cafe Colarusso (Jessup), and the place I ordered from; Colarusso’s Pizza Dunmore.

The pizza…

I’ve eaten at Colarusso’s Pizza Dunmore a bunch of times over the past several years. The place is probably best known for its double-crust pizzas, especially the Double Steak and Double White varieties. I’ve had both and they are delicious. For my dinner order, however, I decided to go a different route; The Six-Cut Red Pizza with Pepperoni.

I was not disappointed. Colarusso’s Red checked all the boxes that one looks for when encountering a square-cut pie. The crust is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sauce is slightly sweet, offering a zesty and bright offset from the bread and cheese. And speaking of the cheese, it’s warm, slightly burnt around the edges, and just thick enough that it barely conceals the sauce right below it. And the bottom of the crust has a nice char.

And the thin-cut pepperoni topping? Perfect.

By the end of the evening, the Colarusso’s Pizza Dunmore box was empty.

The hot wings…

I suppose that there might be people out there who can order a pizza and not add an order of bone-in wings. I am not one of those people. For me, it’s close to a life rule that pizza and hot wings are to be considered a single food group.

To accompany my six slices of square-cut Red Pizza, I ordered the Jumbo Wings tossed in regular hot sauce.

Let me start by saying that the Jumbo Wings from Colarusso’s Pizza Dunmore are sufficiently “jumbo”. This isn’t always the case and it’s not uncommon to have a place sneak in a few puny wings with their supposedly-jumbo ones. I’ve never experienced such disrespect from the fine people at Colarusso’s.

The wings I received were terrific. The skin was crispy and the wings were well-tossed in the sauce. The meat was flavorful and pulled easily away from the bone. And the heat from the sauce was right in line with what I’d expect from a true hot sauce, firey enough that it punishes your tongue just a bit and makes beads of sweat form on top of your head.

I would order these wings again without hesitation.
